A Time of Excitement, Example & Exhortation
By Lynda Varlack
Friday, 16 January, 2009
If the hills and sea could talk, what amazing stories would they have to tell us? No doubt among their favourites would be the early afternoon of Sabbath 10 January 2009 - for it was a day of great joy!
Excitement
They would have witnessed the sudden descent of members, friends and family of Carrot Bay SDA Church onto the beach at Sugar Mill for a very special event. A brisk and curious breeze made its way among the singing crowd as they offered a sacred serenade in a special ceremony. A baptism! Five children of GOD had come to stand before the world and declare their allegiance to Christ Jesus in an age-old ritual of burying the 'old man' and becoming new a creation.
Example
But there were other observers looking on. Visitors from far-away lands were also present…there on holiday to enjoy the warmth and beauty of our islands. Certainly they would not have expected to be witness to such spectacle. People in white robes, walking into water to be prayed over, gently ducked under, raised again and received back to the loving arms of waiting bretheren. A baptism! What thoughts and feelings stirred in their hearts and minds as they watched in fascination?
Some may have felt privileged - for such a sight was not one of the wonders promised in the travel brochures. Like a wedding, attendance at such an intimate and meaningful event was usually reserved for a select few on a carefully chosen guest list. Others may have turned their thoughts to their own spiritual state…trying to recall the last time they went to church, or heard a Bible story of GOD's love, or even just prayed. We may never know, but surely they would take with them an unforgettable memory and compelling example of the newness of life in Christ Jesus.
Exhortation
If the hills and sea ever had voice to tell, no doubt they would be echoing the chorus of angelic celebration in Heaven - for the Kingdom of Heaven had just received five more in Baptism! These precious souls stand now as exhortation to all present that day. To remember the joy and zeal that moves us when we live in fresh commitment to Christ. To risk dignity and publicly declare our choice without shame or reservation. And to continue that amazing journey all the way to Zion by God's Grace.
We congratulate, encourage and praise GOD for our newly received members: Nyaila Callwood, Anson Benjamin, Leonard Linton, Clarita Linton and Kenisha Donovan! Welcome to the family of GOD!
